karva chauth

Karwa Chauth is a festival celebrated by the women in India from the Northern states mainly for the well being and long life of their husbands. As we know now. But how did the festival come into being?

Etymology:

The word Karwa translates to a pot and chauth means the forth, that refers to the fact that the festival is celebrated on the forth of Krishna-paksh.

Hypothesis on the origin of the festival:

·       It is said that the ritual was started by the wives of military men, who used to be far away doing their duties as they carried the risk of their life on their shoulders. It is said that these wives started karwa chauth with their hopes to pray and ask for the safe return of their husbands.

·       The date of karwa chauth falls at the same time as the wheat –sowing cycle in the northern region where big pots (Karwa) are used to store the wheat. Therefore the practice of fasting may have started as a prayer for a good turnout of the harvest.

·       Another story suggests that the festival started in order to promote female companionship. As the newly weds come into a new family, this day marks as a ritual for the women of the family to come together for their husbands and in turn bond and have sisters or strong female friendships for life.

Ultimately, however the festival may have originated, it did fulfilled all three of the purpose of the respective thought of origins.
